MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has announced a new safety initiative known as “Drive to Arrive on U.S. 45,” an intensified enforcement effort to reduce fatal crashes and save lives along the U.S. 45 Corridor.
U.S. 45 begins in Mobile and continues for approximately 60 miles throughout the State of Alabama before crossing state lines into Mississippi. The highway is comprised of less populated areas within Mobile and Washington counties.
ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said, “We have strategically and meticulously developed this safety and enforcement initiative to not only reduce crashes during rush hours or surges of high traffic along U.S. 45, but to also target rural areas along the corridor. While less populated roads typically carry fewer motorists than major interstates or roadways, countless lives are tragically lost each year on rural Alabama roadways.”
ALEA Troopers will implement a high visibility enforcement initiative on U.S. 45 to remove impaired drivers, reduce crashes, promote seat belt usage, and deter speeding motorists. In addition, Troopers will also focus on enforcing Alabama’s Move Over Law which requires motorists to make a lane change when approaching emergency or tow vehicles, or slow down to a reasonable speed if they are not able to safely change lanes.
“Our agency is committed to reducing crashes and saving lives and this new initiative is another testament to that commitment. We will exert all possible resources to keep traveling motorists safe; however, we ask all citizens for their assistance to ensure everyone makes it safely to their destination,” said Secretary Taylor. “We ask everyone to please obey the laws, make smart choices and help us save lives.”
This new safety initiative will begin on Friday, Aug. 13.
