BIRMINGHAM POST – Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency arrested one of two drivers on Monday, May 4, in relation to a fatal crash that occurred on March 9 in the Fairfield area. Kevin Lamar King, 27, of Birmingham has been charged with manslaughter for a crash resulting in the death of Octavia Nicole Johnson, 20, of Birmingham.
Johnson was the passenger of a 2017 Chevy Camaro driven by Keanjra Lashai Maddox, 22, of Birmingham. The investigation indicates Maddox and King were racing along Interstate 59 South, near mile marker 119 when the crash occurred. King, who was driving a 1998 Chevy Camaro, struck Maddox’s vehicle from behind as both drivers attempted to negotiate a curve. The two vehicles left the roadway and traveled down a ravine. Johnson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and received life-threatening injuries. She was transported to UAB Hospital, where she was pronounced dead within the hour. Both Maddox and King were injured and transported to UAB hospital for treatment.
Upon completion of their investigation, ALEA Troopers made contact with King on Monday evening and arrested him without incident. King was transported to Jefferson County Jail, Bessemer, with bond set at $30,000.
