[Montgomery, Alabama] A letter addressed to the Alabama Attorney General containing a white powdery substance was received and opened in the reception area of the Attorney General’s office located on Washington Avenue today. Local, state, and federal first responders immediately evacuated the building and began efforts to identify the substance and decontaminate the eight employees that were exposed.
Initial tests performed by the United States Postal Service concluded the substance was not harmful. The substance was removed from the building and further tests were performed by the Alabama National Guard Civil Support Team confirming the substance was not hazardous.
“The actions performed by the federal, state, and local first responders is a prime example of how working together as a team makes a more effective and efficient government,” said Secretary Spencer Collier of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, “ I would like to commend the City of Montgomery’s Fire Department for the exemplary efforts today.”
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the incident.
