MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Transportation officials are urging motorists across parts of Alabama affected by extreme winter weather to avoid travel until conditions improve, especially in metro Jefferson County.
In the Birmingham area, ALDOT officials urge people to avoid travel until at least noon Thursday.
Heavy snowfall, precipitation and freezing temperatures across parts of the state will cause roadway conditions to remain hazardous through at least mid-day Thursday.
Accumulating snowfall during the 8 o’clock hour Wednesday night is significantly impairing travel in the Birmingham area. Freezing temperatures overnight will complicate ALDOT’s response efforts and the potential for safe travel. Despite roadway treatment activities, ALDOT officials are urging people to stay off roadways until conditions improve Thursday.
“The safest thing for people to do is avoid travel overnight Wednesday and until conditions improve Thursday,” said ALDOT spokesman Tony Harris. “Heavy snowfall, particularly in the Birmingham area, has begun to impair roadways to a point that makes it dangerous to travel. We’re advising people to remain off roadways in the Birmingham area and parts of the state where roadway conditions may remain hazardous.”
