[Montgomery, Ala.] The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), since being fully implemented on Jan. 1, 2015, has made substantial changes to improve the business practices of the 10 legacy agencies to become more efficient. Routine vehicle maintenance for state-issued vehicles is now performed in the area of assignment.
“When reviewing the policies and practices of the 10 legacy agencies, we identified several areas of inefficiencies. I directed my senior staff to implement changes so state law enforcement could operate in a more efficient, effective manner,” said Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier. “During last week’s budget hearing, I gave an example – as a normal practice, the Department of Public Safety required that State Troopers travel to Montgomery or other large posts with an auto shop for routine maintenance such as an oil change. This practice was completely inefficient and wasted valuable state resources.”
Beginning in 2015 with the full implementation of ALEA, Troopers were issued new Wright Express fleet cards and now have routine maintenance work performed in the area they are assigned. Since Jan. 2015, 1,331 services transactions have been performed utilizing the new Wright Express fleet cards.
“After using this example in last week’s budget hearing, there has been misinformation communicated by Legislators and I want to assure the citizens of Alabama and Legislators, this practice was immediately stopped with the full implementation of ALEA. I understand that the issue may be a result of miscommunication, however, the records attached clearly reflect the policy change undertaken by ALEA. Hopefully, the grandstanding and posturing will stop," said Collier.
Collier continued, “ALEA is more efficient and effective -- and I am committed to continuing to make improvements within the agency.”
